Manchester Christmas Markets and Christmas Jumpers

I moved to Manchester 4 years ago this week, I vividly remember the time as it was the year when it was the worst snow on record. I moved the week that there were 6ft snow drifts and everywhere was touched with snow, ice and frost. My first day at my new job in Manchester I got taken to the Christmas Markets, I was frozen but remember the warmth of the markets and the glow of the lights. I’ve always been a fan of the Manchester Christmas Markets and I don’t know of any other city in the UK which does it better.

If your thinking of things to do over the month of December in Manchester then you are spoilt for choice when it comes to festive activities.

Last week my Mum came up for a couple of days with a main intention of exploring the markets. Every year the markets seem to grow but this year they seem to be the biggest yet. The markets on a weekend can sometimes be a bit overwhelming with festive shoppers and children so I’m glad that I took a couple of days off work and we were able to go during the day and evening in the week when it was less pushy.

Manchester Christmas Markets

My favourite area of the markets is the section outside the town hall. I love the lights and at night the place is stunning with its impressive windmill bar. I love all the food stalls and am always tempted by a bit of chorizo and French cheeses. Its also hard to resist all the chocolate and sweet stalls with the beautifully decorated European marzipan fruits and nougat.

My mum and I made sure to sample the mulled wine and tucked into some delicious Chicken Paella. I had the Blueberry mulled wine whilst my mum had the cherry. It was really nice however it doesn’t compare to the hot cherry punch with a dash on amaretto. If your a fan of almonds or marzipan flavours then this drink is certainly one to try. It’s so good in fact that I’ve been making my own at home for most of the year, certainly an addictive drink!

Its always nice to go and see the outdoor ice rink in Spinningfields, whilst I haven’t been on it for a couple of years I always love to stand and people watch. I think its such a lovely thing to have in the city centre and am excited to hear that Selfridges has opened another open air rink at the Trafford Centre. Ice skating at night in Spinningfields would be the perfect date night activity in December followed by hot mulled wine at the markets.

Helter Skelter

Visiting the markets was a perfect opportunity to wear my new Christmas jumper from Tipsy Elves. When it gets to this season I love nothing more than wearing something a bit festive. I liked this jumper as soon as I saw it as I have a bit of a soft spot for the old grumpy cat. I’m really looking forward to wearing this to our office Christmas jumper day next week. I think the cut out shoulders make it really original.
