With the city on the doorstep I often find that I don’t make the effort I should to sample the independent restaurants in the suburbs that I should. One of those is the Post Box Cafe in Chorlton. I first went here about a year ago when they were host the wonderful nutrininja smoothie wars event. This time I went back to try their new pop up night ‘Happy Bundays’ and I’ve got to say it was long overdue.
It was a good chance to meet my friend Chris who lives in Chorlton and the Cafe is a short walk from the tram stop nestled right next to the post office on Wilbraham Road. The Post Box is well known for its locally sourced all day breakfasts and home baked cakes and treats however the night I went they chose to do something a little different.
Happy Bundays is a Pop Up diner taking advantage of the location offering a MADchester music inspired menu, with
handmade burgers, steak burritos, posh hot dogs and a brilliant selection of sides.
I went for the ‘Inspiral Carpets’ posh dog, which was a foot long banger on a brioche roll. Smothered in chilli and topped with guacamole and jalapenos it was a real treat. It came with sides of home-made coleslaw (which I am not usually a fan of but the recipe was delicious, I could have eaten more) and fries.
Chris had the ‘808state’ burger which was strips of steak cooked with shoestring onions and served in a brioche bun. It looked absolutely delicious, a little tricky to eat as a burger but after becoming a bit addicted to a good burger I must admit despite my posh dog been amazing I did have quite a big pang of food envy!
I absolutely loved the fact that the burgers were topped with a potato smiley, it was a really nice touch and took me right back to the 90’s.
We were so full we didn’t take advantage of the ‘After party’ deserts of home-made cheesecakes which looking back I really regret now, however it’s not that much longer to wait until the next event and gives me a great excuse to go back.
It was a really unique popup event and one which is been run again on the 13th of June 2015 from 4-10pm anyone wanting a table can either reserve or just pop in
The Post Box Cafe always has events running you can check them out on their events page here.
